Student Experience

Mathilde Beaudet in U.S. Congress. 1NN

Congressional Fellow 2016 Mathilde Beaudet

"When I heared about The French American Fund Congressional Fellowship Program I was really motivated to enroll. I had experienced previous internships in the field of exchanges and diplomacy and I was interested into American politics. The French American Fund program met my expectations. This Paris-based institution provided the kind of unique experience I was looking for, being a Congressional Fellow on Capitol Hill while attending classes at The Washington Center.  I was honored and grateful to be their first student ever to be sent to Washington for a four months legislative assignment !
Upon my arrival to the Washington Center last January 2016, our instructors suggested we enjoy every moment and opportunity made available to students. This four months program would end before we would realize the full range of possibilities offered in this great city.
For students interested into public actions, international relations and politics, Washington is a whirlwind of activities, networks and initiatives related to these issues. The intensive 15 weeks program studies at The Washington Center prepares and places us as young professionals and tomorrow's leaders.
In the meantime I had joined Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen's office (R-FL27) as fellow; this assignement was a unique opportunity to learn about the legislative process. I engaged into various projects, writing letters and remarks on behalf the Congresswoman, dealing with constituents' issues and questions about Capitol Hill tours, and attending briefings and hearings such as the February 25th Testimony by Secretary of State John Kerry before the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.
I experienced doing research for the Committee on Foreign Affairs and North Africa to prepare hearings.
Thanks to The French American Fund, I have had the chance to be part of this program that represented a decisive turning point in my career and in my life."

In congressional offices, interns' responsibilities vary. They will be asked to answer phones, research legislation, assist the member of Congress' legislative staff, attend hearings and briefings, and answer constituent letters on various issues before the House.
